B. Braun Renal Dialysis Facility

AOCA provided full Civil and Structural Engineering services for the development of the B. Braun Renal Dialysis Facility in Portlaoise. The facility was developed to provide a dedicated renal dialysis service for the local area, significantly improving accessibility for patients who previously had to travel to Tullamore for treatment.

Working closely with the project architects, AOCA delivered the structural design for the facility, which incorporates a steel frame construction with two monopitched roof structures spanning the reception area and the main treatment section of the building. The complete structural design was undertaken in-house, ensuring a coordinated and efficient approach from initial design through to fabrication and construction.

A key engineering consideration was the challenging ground conditions associated with the site, which is located within an area influenced by an existing esker formation and historic sand and gravel extraction activities. To establish an accurate understanding of the ground profile, AOCA commissioned a comprehensive site investigation programme incorporating boreholes, window sampling and dynamic probing. The findings allowed the development of a bespoke foundation solution tailored to the site conditions and designed to ensure the long-term performance and stability of the facility.

The project also required close coordination with ESB due to the presence of a high-voltage powerline adjacent to the site. Careful planning and communication ensured that the development remained clear of required infrastructure zones and that the existing pylons and associated equipment were protected throughout the works.

Successfully completed and fully operational, the B. Braun Renal Dialysis Facility represents an important healthcare asset for the region. AOCA is proud to have contributed to the delivery of such a valuable facility within our local community.
